The 2018 action thriller does not exactly close the door and walk away. It blows the door off its hinges, reveals a major betrayal, leaves Alice Kerr’s fate uncertain, and gives James Silva a very personal reason to hunt Li Noor.
That certainly feels like the beginning of another movie.
So, is there a sequel to Mile 22?
The short answer is no, at least not yet. A Mile 22 sequel was genuinely put into development before the first film even reached theaters. However, as of August 29, 2026, no second movie has been released and there is no confirmed production schedule or release date.
The interesting part is that Mile 22 Part 2 was once much more than a fan rumor.
Mile 22 Part 2 Really Was Planned
Before Mile 22 opened in August 2018, STX Entertainment was already thinking bigger.
Writer Umair Aleem was hired to work on a sequel, with Peter Berg associated with the planned follow-up. Reports at the time described Mile 22 as the potential beginning of a larger franchise rather than a single standalone action movie.
There were even plans to expand the world beyond theatrical films.
STX announced a related short-form project called The Kiev Exchange, which would focus on the CIA’s Ground Branch. That tells us the studio originally saw real franchise potential in the concept.
Director Peter Berg also had bigger ambitions.
Mark Wahlberg explained before the movie’s release that Berg had imagined the story as a possible trilogy.
But Wahlberg added one very important condition: more movies were never guaranteed.
He made it clear that if audiences did not respond to the first film and it was not successful enough, a second movie might not happen.
Unfortunately for Mile 22, that warning turned out to matter.
Why Didn’t They Make Another Mile 22?
There has never been a clear public announcement saying, “Mile 22 Part 2 is officially canceled because of this one reason.”
Still, the numbers tell us a lot.
Mile 22 earned about $36 million at the domestic box office, while its worldwide total reached roughly $66.3 million. Rotten Tomatoes lists a reported production budget of around $50 million.
A movie earning more worldwide than its production budget does not automatically mean it made a profit.
Studios also have marketing and distribution expenses, while theaters keep part of ticket revenue. A film intended to launch an action franchise normally needs to create much stronger financial momentum.
The opening weekend was also disappointing. Forbes reported a domestic opening of about $13.6 million.
Then there were the reviews.
Mile 22 currently sits at 23% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 192 critic reviews. Its audience score is higher, but the critical reception was clearly rough.
And remember what Wahlberg had already said before release: whether the franchise continued would depend heavily on whether people responded to the movie and whether it became successful enough to justify another one.
Put those pieces together and the picture becomes fairly clear.
The studio entered 2018 imagining a franchise. The first film then delivered modest commercial results and weak reviews. After that, serious public movement on the sequel largely disappeared.
That does not prove a formal cancellation.
But it strongly explains why Mile 22 Part 2 went from “in development” to something fans have spent years waiting for.
Will Mile 22 Have a Part 2?
Technically, it is still possible.
Hollywood has revived abandoned or dormant projects after much longer gaps. Streaming platforms have also changed the economics of sequels. A film that struggled theatrically can sometimes develop a new audience years later.
But there is an important difference between possible and confirmed.
As of August 29, 2026, there is no announced filming date, confirmed release date, official trailer, or clear public production timetable for Mile 22 Part 2.
Older listings describing the sequel as “upcoming” mostly trace back to the original development news from 2018. They should not be treated as proof that the movie is currently entering production.
For now, the safest answer is:
A Mile 22 sequel was planned, but Part 2 has never been completed or officially scheduled for release.
And that is especially frustrating because of the way the first movie ends.
What Happened to Alice at the End of Mile 22?
Major spoilers start here.
The final act reveals that almost everything James Silva and the Overwatch team believed about Li Noor, played by Iko Uwais, was wrong.
Li was not simply a valuable foreign intelligence asset trying to escape his country.
He was part of a much larger Russian revenge operation.
Earlier in the film, Silva’s team kills a young Russian man during a raid. That death turns out to be extremely important. The extraction mission involving Li is essentially used as a trap designed to expose and destroy Overwatch.
Li reaches the aircraft as planned.
Alice Kerr, played by Lauren Cohan, is also on the plane.
Then the truth becomes clear.
The encrypted information supplied by Li helps expose Overwatch’s secret operations center, allowing the Russian side to attack it. Silva realizes that Li has played them.
At almost the same time, trouble develops aboard the aircraft.
And then the movie refuses to give us the answer we really want.
Does Alice Die in Mile 22?
We never actually see Alice die.
That matters.
The movie strongly suggests something terrible happens aboard the aircraft, and Silva’s later behavior makes Alice’s fate look grim. However, her death is deliberately left off-screen and unresolved.
That ambiguity feels intentional.
If Mile 22 Part 2 had moved forward, the sequel could have revealed that Alice was killed, captured, injured, or somehow survived Li’s betrayal.
Instead, because the sequel never arrived, Alice has remained trapped in one of those strange movie limbos where a character is neither clearly alive nor officially dead.
Eight years later, we still do not have the answer.
Why the Ending Clearly Set Up Another Movie
Whatever you think about Mile 22, the ending does one thing very effectively: it changes the entire game.
For most of the movie, James Silva believes he is controlling the mission.
He isn’t.
Li Noor is several moves ahead.
The Russians are several moves ahead.
Overwatch is not carrying out a brilliant extraction. It is walking directly into a trap.
By the end, Silva finally understands who his real opponent is.
The movie closes with him focusing his attention on Li, creating an obvious setup for a revenge-driven second chapter. Den of Geek noted at the time that the ending was intentionally structured with sequel possibilities in mind.
You can almost picture Part 2.
Silva hunting Li across different countries.
Li staying one step ahead.
Alice’s fate finally being revealed.
The real scale of the Russian operation becoming clearer.
That is why the absence of a sequel feels more noticeable than it would with a normal action movie.
Mile 22 does not simply leave a small unanswered question.
It practically points toward another film.
Is Mile 22 Based on a True Story?
No.
Mile 22 is not based on a true story.
That question comes up often because Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg previously made several movies inspired by real events.
Their earlier collaborations included Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, and Patriots Day.
Mile 22 was different.
It was a fictional story written around covert intelligence operations, a CIA-style tactical unit, international espionage, and a fictional Southeast Asian country. Contemporary reviews specifically noted that it was Berg and Wahlberg’s first collaboration in that run that was not based on a true-life historical event.
So there was no real James Silva leading this exact mission.
There was no real Li Noor carrying this exact intelligence.
And there was no real 22-mile extraction that unfolded the way we see in the film.
The movie borrows the language and atmosphere of real intelligence work, which helps it feel believable, but the story itself is fiction.
What a Mile 22 Sequel Could Have Explored
The abandoned setup leaves several surprisingly strong story possibilities.
Alice’s survival
This would probably have been the question fans wanted answered first.
Since her death is not shown, a sequel could easily have revealed that Alice survived or was taken prisoner.
Silva versus Li Noor
The first film spends much of its running time positioning Li as someone Silva needs to protect.
The ending flips that relationship.
Making them direct enemies would immediately give Part 2 a more personal conflict.
The remains of Overwatch
The attack destroys much of Silva’s support structure.
A sequel could have shown him rebuilding the team, working outside official channels, or questioning the intelligence system he trusted so completely.
The Russian revenge plot
The first movie only reveals the larger plan near the end.
Part 2 could have explored who was behind the operation and whether Li was simply following orders or pursuing his own agenda.
There was enough material there for another film.
The problem was never that Mile 22 had nowhere to go.
The problem was getting the next movie financed and made.
Could Mile 22 Part 2 Still Happen?
Never say never in Hollywood.
We’ve watched sequels appear ten, twenty, and even thirty years after their original films.
So a revival is certainly imaginable.
Mark Wahlberg still works regularly in action films. Iko Uwais remains a recognizable martial-arts star. Streaming has also given older movies second lives with audiences who missed them during their theatrical runs.
But there is currently no strong evidence that Mile 22 Part 2 is moving forward.
Until Wahlberg, Berg, a studio, or a major distributor announces something concrete, fans should treat any supposed release dates floating around online with caution.
A real comeback would normally bring something verifiable: a studio announcement, confirmed cast, production start, trade reporting, or release schedule.
Right now, we do not have that.
For Now, Mile 22 Ends at the Runway
Mile 22 was supposed to open a larger world.
Instead, it became a movie with a sequel ending but no sequel.
The original plan was real. A writer was hired. A broader franchise was discussed. Peter Berg envisioned multiple movies, and Mark Wahlberg openly talked about what would need to happen for the story to continue.
But audiences did not turn Mile 22 into the breakout franchise starter its creators needed.
So if you’re asking is there a sequel to Mile 22, the answer in 2026 remains no.
Part 2 was planned, but it never reached theaters.
That leaves James Silva still staring at Li Noor’s picture, Alice’s fate still unresolved, and the audience waiting for a second mission that may never begin.
