That is a beautiful bit of storytelling because the mystery spends so much time making us believe Owen is the center of everything.
In the end, Hannah and Bailey are the real emotional heart of Season 1.
Why Does Bailey Calling Hannah Mom Matter So Much?
Think about where Bailey starts.
She does not want Hannah replacing her mother. She does not fully trust her. Their relationship is tense even before Owen disappears.
Then everything falls apart.
The two women travel together, uncover Owen’s hidden past, face danger, argue, grieve, and slowly learn to depend on each other.
Most importantly, Hannah repeatedly proves that Bailey’s safety matters more to her than what she personally wants.
By the time we reach the five-year flash-forward, Bailey calling her Mom tells us something huge without needing a speech.
Hannah became her family.
Laura Dave has said that she initially thought she was writing one love story but realized she was also telling another: the relationship between Hannah and Bailey.

The story shows Hannah the life she lost.

Ethan and Owen are not two different husbands.
Ethan is Owen’s original identity.
The story reveals that the man Hannah knows as Owen had created another identity while trying to escape the dangerous consequences of his earlier life.

Does Owen Ever Come Back After the Season 1 Ending?
This question has a different answer now than it did in 2023.
When Season 1 originally ended, Owen’s future was deliberately uncertain.
But Apple later continued the story.
Season 2 premiered on February 20, 2026, based on Laura Dave’s sequel novel The First Time I Saw Him. Apple’s official description says Owen shows up after five years on the run, forcing Hannah and Bailey to confront the possibility of bringing their family back together.
So if you are watching only Season 1, the gallery meeting feels like a final bittersweet goodbye.
If you continue into Season 2, that moment becomes the bridge to another chapter.
The Line Is Romantic, but Bailey’s One Word Matters More
Owen’s final Season 1 message gives Hannah something she probably needed to know.
He remembers her.
He remembers their marriage.
